The Psychedelic Journal of Time Travel Issue Three by CarlPearce The Psychedelic Journal of Time Travel Issue Three by CarlPearce
This is the cover I did for issue three of The Psychedelic Journal of Time Travel.

I was given free reign to work on this and so threw in a few things that were interesting to me at the time. I love dinosaurs. I was reading Drive at the time and so that's where the Chevy Nova / Malibu comes into it. Templar Knights are cool. The Hollywood sign in the 70's, fallen into disrepair. The Trojan helmet is a nod to my excitement for X-Men Days Of Future Past and Magneto's new suit. And a few other things that you may or may not spot.

This was entirely created in Photoshop. Rough, line and colour. It was fun. The colours came out a lot muddier and a lot less graphic than I originally wanted. But what the heck...

You can find the facebook page here www.facebook.com/thepsychedeli…

I've had a good look all over but the only thing i can see is the stripped rockets which his penguins fired, is that it? Whats the ! on the bomb a ref to?

Boom! You got it spot on, bud. The '!' on the bomb isn't a reference to anything, truth be told. I was thinking of changing it to a smiley face. Probably would have been better.

I can't even remember where that idea came from. I do know I forgot to put the extinction symbol on his torso, though. The concept is supposed to be, like Wells' War Of The Worlds. a far future human strain that has evolved past it's body so implanted it's brain into a perfect cyborg physique. But is entirely embarrassed by it's lack of humanity. Hence the Kabuki mask. May have been creepier with a white mask or a 'doll' face or something, but I wanted a bit of colour on him.

haha. That's really funny! I think the Kabuki mask was a good choice. The white masks and doll faces are a bit overdone.

Exactly. And I'm fucking sick of that shit. The other option was a pig mask or, like, some shitty cartoon rabbit. Like the kind you'd find in Blackpool or somewhere. Ah, fuck! I should have had him wearing a Pinocchio mask!!! "I'm a real boy" etc...

Too true. I'd have thrown a few more things in there but it was already getting crowded.

Saw your article about working space in the latest Imagine FX, by the way. Very nice. Also, very tidy. My office is a complete dump. I'm sure there is wildlife in here somewhere.

There is a good chance my studio isn't usually THAT tidy... a VERY good chance indeed ;)
Think you might be one up on me with the wildlife thing though!

As a disclaimer, the wildlife is only teeny tiny little spiders. Like, one or two of them. Not like the fanged-bastards you get your way. More through a lack of dusting. My problem is drawings, old bills, dvds, cameras, notes, doodles, boxes and Lego stacked high on every available space. I really do need to have a good spring clean.

Going on from your two computer set-up, which I love (used to have it myself until the backlight died in my otherwise okay MacBookPro), how do you work with them? Separate hard-drives, shared, time machined, networked? How do you back up? At the moment, stupidly, I don't. Keep meaning to buy an external and use time machine for I'm technologically thick as pig's shit.

The email/entertainment computer I also backup jobs to via ethernet cable.... and both machines have a separate external drive using time machine. Nothing real fancy... but it only needs that one time failure of a drive in the middle of a job to scare you into doing something about i!

Cheers. I'm fascinated by that period of Hollywood history where they just let the sign go to rack and ruin. I've only hinted at it here with the top of the 'O' missing and the wooden posts holding it up. But still.

I love that Brain in a jar villain with the kabuki mask it's just so surreal and awesome :D

I'd imagine him having the same voice and personality as Betrayus from the ridiculous Pac-Man cartoon.

Cheers, bud.

I imagine him sounding a little like a cross between Brando Jor El and Robocop.

The mask is to hide his embarrassment over the loss of his humanity in his quest to evolve past his fragile future human body. Kinda like Well's War Of The Worlds Martians. Originally I was going to go with a pig or gorilla mask but wanted it to be 100% ex-human in a 'perfect' greek god sculpture body made of metalic sinew and tendons built over a life support system.

Ha. Cheers. I always found the term 'muscle car' to be very homo-erotic. I rather James Deans terminology where he called his car 'The Little Bastard'. I like that.

I can't even remember what this one it. It's a cross between a '73 Chevy Malibu and a '73 Chevy Nova, I think. I was reading Drive at the time and liked the look of the cars when I googled them. Think fake-Jack Reacher drove one in the Tiny Tom starring movie, too.

Think if I was going to go for a loud, brash, oversized American car I'd pick on of them. But I'd be flat-broke trying to fill the tank with petrol after, what, a week? A day? 5 miles?

Hmm. The Little Bastard does indeed sound more badass.

Ahh, the bittersweet reality of these cars. They look amazing, but you simply cannot afford the gas they guzzle up. I wish cars still looked like that today. I find they had so much character.  I think it's cool that you did a cross between a Malibu and a Nova. You ever seen Gran Torino? I don't blame those kids for wanting to steal it...

I have seen Gran Torino. Not overly keen on that car personally. The front is sexy! The back is... just not to my taste. Although, fuck yes, I would take one if it was going. Starsky & Hutch colours too.

I must admit a fondness for something like an Aston Martin DB3 and the Mark 1 Ford Escort (my Dad had one when I were a lad) and fellow classics. But the modern models (check out the vantage N430) and the current Jaguars are fucking gorgeous.

I think that car looks absolutely badass. And it fits well with Clint Eastwood's character, too!

Ah yes, the Aston Martins are claaaasssyyy. I admit that the modern models you mentioned are pretty sweet as well. Though I'm more of an Audi kind of person. There was this movie a few years ago called In Time (a really shit movie if you ask me) that had a cool concept nonetheless: the story was set in the future, where all the cars were modified classics, like matte black Dodge Challengers and such. www.google.ca/search?q=in+time…
