Summer Camp by CarlPearce Summer Camp by CarlPearce
Something I did for an educational editorial under a tight deadline (when is it not). Threw some nice, bright, vibrant colour in here for a feel good factor. I doubt the kids wanna be learning the shit that's in these books so if you can give them something warming to look at then surely that's a bonus. Editors think it's too bright at the moment though. They want me to dull it down. Yeah, good thinking.

They might as well learn young how drab and grey will be the lives that school's conditioning 'em for...

In all seriousness you're right though, this sort of stuff bored the tits off me in school - who wants to read about other kids when you could be reading about ghosts or dinosaurs or pirates or aliens?
I'd never thought about the poor illustrator who'd had to draw this stuff and try and make it look appealing!

I know. It's worn me down a bit over the years, but I know the silly things they pick up on now and steer clear. The real gut-punch is the complete lack of time do do all this in, though. The turn over is so quick. You barely get any job satisfaction, if any, from it.

They want you to make it less vibrant? As an English teacher, I'd be all over this in a spread or flyer. I think it looks fantastic!

Thanks. You need to tell this to people like OUP, Pearson, Heinmann and CUP etc when they do their little surveys. They don't believe me.

Huh, how weird! If I get a survey from them, I'll definitely let them know!

Love the way you draw kids.

Cheers. It's my bread and butter work, drawing kids. I don't understand why so many brilliant artists get them so wrong.

My guess is that it's something to do with how quickly kids change. I can take pics of my son a week apart and he's like a different person. He's not 'fixed' in reality, so he's not fixed in my mind's eye either. Of course, it's also impossible to get him to sit still long enough for me to draw him properly anyway. ;)

Looks bright and welcoming and just reminded me that I have to begin summer camp registrations!
