Directions by CarlPearce
Directions
A quick pic for a quick job. Didn't need much, just a young teen girl with a map asking a plod for directions. Nice sunny colours, needed to be an American setting for a book for their side of the pond. All good. Bright yellow outer box is the crop area.

Hope you like.

A Raindrop's Trip by CarlPearce
A Raindrop's Trip
This is a page that I drew for a book that never got any further than this single page with me as the illustrator. I roughed the entire book out and did this one sample page for the designers to present to the publisher. The publishers decided, seemingly overnight, that they now wanted a 'younger look', after originally specifying a rather more National Geographic look. Unfortunately, they couldn't conceive the idea that I may be able to change style slightly and draw in a 'younger style' so gave it to someone else to work on with no warning.

I wouldn't mind but they actually chased me specifically to do the job and I agreed to squeeze it in amongst my rather busy schedule.

Oh, well. These things happen.

I got paid a 'kill fee' (40%?) and got a time consuming job off of my crowded slate. It's a shame. Page three would have looked really good when finished. This needed more detail on this, the colours needed tweaking etc.

The pale yellow blocks are where the text boxes would have been placed, by the way.

Upgrade by CarlPearce
Upgrade
The opening spread to my book series. This double-page-spread sets up the Prof putting the final touches on the upgraded now super-sci-fi VW camper.

Still not 100% sure if this is finished.

Hello to the few.

One or two things. Firstly, have you checked out X-Men Days Of Future Past yet? Wow. Seriously. What a movie. I loved it and everyone else I've spoken to seems to have too. I really wanna see Godzilla.... but I really wanna see that again too. But how bloody expensive it it to go to the cinema these days? The price of one ticket in our local could get you two months subscription to LoveFilm or Netflix. Shocking.

Secondly, check out HoytSilva's kickstarter book here www.kickstarter.com/projects/1… He asked if I'd put the word about and it looks a good 'en. I have no idea how kickstarter works but I gather you donate to get a project off the ground, so, do what you will. You have to admire anyone who wants to put one of these together. I can't imagine anything I'd wanna try to put out there. I'm a boring old fart and just want to get my garden finished, ha ha.

Lastly, I've been a bit quiet on here lately because I'm up to my eyeballs with work on a new series I'm doing. Very fun imaginative work. I'll post bits on here but I'm only at rough stage at the mo. The first two need to all be done before my wedding in early August. Yikes! Need to get those coins in.

Off now. Catch ya later.

Thanks. I've got loads of ethnicly diverse character in my folio. I illustrated a few titles for Tamarind books over the past 10 years.

I noticed!  It's good to see.  Part of the objective of our group is to bring overlooked ethnicity (specifically Afrocentric ethnicity) into the mainstream a little more.  I applaud your effort!

If I'm honest, it's not a conscious effort. It's just how it comes out.

I come from a very rural area in North Wales. There aren't many varying shades of skin colour around here other than the lads who work in the local Indian Restaurant, for no other reason than how remote we are. However, I'm a huge movie fan. Always have been from a very young age. I'm used to a world of different races through the movies, but being from a smaller area, there has never been any issues over race bias, like there is in cities. I've never seen the point of issues due to how people look or where they're from. If anything I find it more interesting meeting someone who isn't like me.

So I naturally add different races to my stories as a reflection on how I see the world. Publishers saw that and took me on for that reason. I just present the world around me. Well. The movie world around me. If it was the actual world around me it'd be mountains, lakes and rough seas with more sheep than people, ha ha.
